Yesterday I did a hike from Hondarribia to Saint-Jean-de-Luz with a friend.
A friend of mine had done the hike last year and he recommended me to do it as the first thing, when I told him I was going to San Sebastian. I can’t thank him enough for that advice! The hike is along the coast and is about 13 km. long.
If you are interested in more hikes in Basque Country here is another one.
How to get from San Sebastian to Hondarribia
From San Sebastian you can take Euskotren to Irun. This trip costs 1,35 € if you got the Mugi-card, if not the trip costs 2,45 €. From Irun you have to take the bus to Hondarribia. This is bus E25 towards Kosta-Arro and you can take it from the train station. The bus costs 0,28 € with the Mugi-card.
The hike from Hondarribia to Saint-Jean-de-Luz
From the busstop in Hondarribia, you have to walk along the harbour to find the boat that crosses from Hondarribia in Spain to Hendaya in France. The boat costs 1,90 €.
As soon as you arrive to the other side, you’ll have to start walking along the beach. The beach is very beautiful and there are lots of swimmers and surfers. When you reach the end of the beach, you have to walk a bit away from the coast to get to some more open roads. When you walk past the Château Observatoire Abbadia, you are very close to the place, where you get to the small paths along the coast.
The hike is so beautiful and you have to stop a many times, just to admire the view. The hike is quite flat, so I’d say that it is pretty easy. You will probably get tired, because the hike is quite long, but it is totally worth it.
Along the way, you can always hear the sound of the ocean, which I find very calming. Yesterday was a beautiful, sunny day which made the view and the whole ambience even better.
Afterwards, we enjoyed some great (and much needed) food and spent the rest of the day exploring Saint-Jean-de-Luz. I immediately fell in love with the town, as it is very beautiful and calm.
Finally we decided to take the train home to San Sebastian. We were both very exhausted, nonetheless it had been a great day.
